Photovoltaic charger

Photocharger

A photovoltaic charger for personal electronic devices like notebooks, mobile phones, media players, digital cameras, etc. Works by using an array of photovoltaic/photo/solar cells to convert incident light into electrical energy (DC voltage). The charger does not store energy, but dissipates electric charge when connected to any electronic device.

The problem

Most common portable consumer electronics require a DC power source, which is often supplied with the product in the form of a AC to DC step down transformer. Also, all electronic circuits, whether passive or active, consume electric power. Standby or vampire power results in colossal power losses. The aim is to find an alternative to present day electronic device adapters which are bundled with every device you purchase, not only adding to material redundancy, but also to the wastage of precious electrical energy through step down transformation, heat and standby/phantom power.

Form & function

The form of the photovoltaic charger should enable it to pick up light at maximum possible conditions in order to improve its efficiency. Fixed angle inclination, though not the optimal choice, provides consistent output. Automated angle inclination through the use of miniature motors can enable the side panels to orient themselves independently to obtain maximum possible incident light, but would involve the overhead of powering its own motors.
